Is it bad from my part to email my friend?

I have guy friend who I email frequently in order to keep ourselves in touch. Since he lives in other town I felt like emailing is nice way to keep in touch with your friends. But I have noticed from the beginning that he never takes initiative to send me any email. I have always found me taking initiative for sending him message about how he is doing and everything. So I am concern that is it bad from my part to take initiative in emailing him or is it just his way of talking.Or is it something like he doesn't like me sending him emails. Though he always appreciates my messages so I have never found his responses rude or anything but I am just making a guess. I would really appreciate any advice from anyone.
